Aloe Vera is definitely no stranger to the hair world. You can find it in almost every beauty product on the market in different forms. Even though we adore these types of products because of the amazing results we receive, few know the reason behind using it in the first place.
For thousands of years, Aloe Vera has been used medicinally. Its affects on skin, hair and overall health have some experts calling it the “ultimate ingredient”. So, what makes this plant so special?
1. MOISTURE
Aloe packs a punch when It comes to hydration. It leaves a moisture-retaining barrier onto the hair that helps deliver moisture by easily penetrating the hair cuticle.
2. TREATS DRY SCALP
Along with delivering moisture to the hair shaft, it also moisturizes the scalp. It reduces inflammation that calms itchiness associated with dandruff and other forms of dermatitis. Some research shows that aloe vera is antifungal and antibacterial.
3. GROWTH
There are enzymes in Aloe called proteolytic enzymes that effectively break down dead skin cells on the scalp that may unclog hair follicles. If hair follicles are clogged with sebum, dirt, or dead skin they cannot grow properly. A clean scalp allows more nutrients to penetrate the hair follicle effectively.
4. pH BALANCING
The scalp pH levels is important to the basic function of the hair’s growth cycle. The pH level scale ranges from 0 to 14 (Acidic to Alkaline). Healthy hair and scalp sebum has a pH level between 4.5 to 5.5. Since this is relatively low on the scale, our hair and scalp’s pH can easily get out of balance. Aloe Vera’s pH level is 7. The application of Aloe Vera helps counteract the any acidity or alkalinity that may exist. The signs of pH imbalance are a fungal infection, dandruff, weak hair strands, hair loss, eczema, psoriasis, dry and itchy scalp.
5. CLEANSING
Aloe helps to keep your pores clean by breaking down dead skin cells without stripping the hair of the necessary moisture. It is most often used as a pre-treatment before shampooing.
6. STRENGTHENS & REPAIRS
Aloe contains vitamins A, C, and E which is responsible for healthy cell growth and shiny hair. IT also contains B12 and Folic Acid, which are known to prevent hair loss and much more!
7. PROTECT
In addition to the vitamins that Aloe Vera offer, there are also antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the hair and scalp from free radical damage. Free radicals are responsible for aging, tissue damage and disease.
8. DETANGLE
The use of Aloe Vera flesh on the hair reduces friction when detangling and creates enough “slip” that aids in preventing knots and breakage.
Below I have included a quick DIY Aloe Recipe that I use often. It softens, moisturizes, and detangles great for me and my daughters!
