Deciding to embrace, maintain style and grow your naturally curly hair can be challenging. Having a natural hair regimen is the foundation to getting what you want out of your natural hair journey. Whether it’s more moisture, length retention or scalp health; here is how you can get just that.

“I want a natural hair routine to improve moisture….”

I’ll be honest this should be the goal of every natural out there. If your strands are currently struggling with hanging onto moisture be sure you are pre-pooing and deep conditioning with heat on wash day. I also recommend following up with the L.O.C moisturizing technique or a variation to further seal in moisture. Not all products are created equal so it’s important to pay attention to how your hair responds before adding them to your natural hair routine. When you find a winning combination or method stick with it.

“I want a natural hair routine for length…”

As a natural the healthier your hair is the shorter is may seem. Don’t worry. To put it simply, it’s called shrinkage. It’s not that our hair is shorter; just that since our strands are well nourished and healthy, they wave, curl and coil unapologetically. To retain the precious length, you’ve worked so hard for involves regular trims, attention to your ends and protecting them. Skipping trims in a no-no. It may seem counter-intuitive to trim but think of it like a garden. Weeds will always attempt to grow in your garden but if pull them up your garden will thrive. Do not let a tiny trim turn into a hair cut because you avoided a trim. Another way to pay attention to your ends is by applying product to your ends first. After wash day applying hair oils and butters to the ends first and then up higher onto the hair shaft ensures that the oldest parts of your hair are not ignored. Also incorporate protective hair styles that cover your ends and reduce manipulation to help prevent breakage & split ends.

“I want a natural hair routine that improves my scalp…”

There are a lot of naturals that are on their way to long natural hair except for one problem... They experience frequent scalp irritation and dryness. Just like the dirt is to a garden so is the scalp. Healthy hair must start from the root. To combat scalp dryness, I like to do scalp massages without oil to encourage the natural sebum(oil) my scalp produces. When your scalp is a bit dryer than usual it is a good idea to use oils directly onto the scalp along with massages. If you feel you are experiencing symptoms like excessive flaking, bumps, redness, or even just generally discomfort I recommend seeing a Dermatologist. They will help you get a better understanding of your scalp’s needs and on track to a healthier scalp.

Getting moisture, length and a healthier scalp from your hair regimen by using these tips and techniques is only the beginning. For more natural hair care secrets join the Curlie Club for exclusive access to natural hair solutions and resources.
